Craps Bets

There are a very large number of potential bets that craps players can make. Some craps bets pay 30 to 1 while others pay less then 2 to 1. The difference is how many combinations of the dice you can roll the desired number.

There are three sections of craps bets on this page. The Best Bets in Craps which are common bets that minimize the house edge and are generally thought of as a good crap bet. The Moderate Craps Bets are bets that are popular bets but the odds aren’t as favorable as the best bets. There are also the High Risk Craps Bets which are also referred to as “sucker bets” because they offer high payouts but also have a larger house edge. After each of the bets in the high risk and moderate craps sections, I will put in red why the bets aren’t as favorable as they may seem.

Best Bets in Craps

Pass Line - This is the most common bet on the craps table and there are two ways to win with this bet. You can win on the come out roll with a 7/11 or once a point number is established, you can win, if the shooters roll is the point number. Read more: How to Play Craps.

Don’t Pass Line - The don’t pass line bet is the opposite of the pass line. You are betting against the shooter and hoping that they are unable to make their point number before they roll a 7. On the come out roll you win if the shooter rolls a 2 or 3 and push if a 12 is rolled.

Taking Odds - Once a point is established you will be able to take odds on your bet. This is one of the best bets in a casino and winning craps players take advantage of this bet. Read more: Craps Odds.

Moderate Craps Bets

Place Bets -This is a bet on any of the potential point numbers. Place bets are won when the number that is rolled matches your place bet number, the number has to be rolled before a 7.

This bet is not paid at the true odds.

High Risk Craps Bets

Put Bet - This bet is made after the come-out roll and is placed on the pass line. You are able to choose your “point number”.

The problem with this bet is you don’t have the chance to win on the come-out roll which wins 45% of the time.

Big 6 & Big 8 - This bet can be found at the corner of the craps table. This bet is that a 6 or 8 will be rolled before a 7.

The bet seems reasonable until you find out that the casinos pay you 1:1 for this bet. If you were to place the same wager on a place bet, you would be paid 7 to 6! The house edge on this bet is 9.09%

Field Bet - By placing this bet you are betting that the next roll will be a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12. The bet pays even money for all the bets except 2 and 12 where they pay 2 to 1.

This may look appealing because you have 7 numbers out of a possible 12. The problem is that the chances to get a number that you don’t have is 20/36. This gives the house an edge of 5.56%.

Hardways - The hardway bets are found on the center of the craps table. You can bet on the Hard Four (2-2), Hard Six (3-3), Hard Eight (4-4) and Hard Ten (5-5). When you place a hardway bet you are betting that your hardway number will be rolled before a 7 or the easy way is rolled.

Sound Difficult to win? It is… the casinos love when craps players make a hardway bet. The Hard Six and Eight pay 9 to 1 when the true odds are 10 to 1, this is a house advantage of 9.09%. The Hard Four and Ten pay 7 to 1 and the true odds are 8 to 1, this is a house advantage of 11.11%!

Any Craps - This is a one roll bet and is betting that the next roll with be a 2, 3 or 12.

It pays 7 to 1 but the house edge on this bet is 11.11% because the true odds are 8 to 1.

Any Seven - A one roll bet that the next roll will be a 7.

It pays 4 to 1 and the true odds are 5 to 1. The house advantage is 16.67%!

Eleven or Three - This is two separate one-roll bets that the next roll will be a 11 or 3.

It pays 15 to 1 and the true odds are 17 to 1. The house advantage is 11.11%

Twelve or Three - The same as the 11 or 3 bet but with 12 or 2.

It pays 30 to 1 and the true odds are 35 to 1. The house advantage is 13.89%

Horn Bet- One roll bet on the numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12.

This bet is payed by the odds posted for the number that is rolled. The house edge is 12.50%

Horn High Bet - This is a one roll bet that is made in multiples of 5 and the better puts one unit on three of the horn numbers, and two units on the chosen high numbers.

This bet depends on the odds of the high number that is chosen. This bet is similar to the horn bet so think of the house edge to be around 12-15%.

C&E - A one roll bet that the next roll will be 2, 3, 11 or 12. C stands for Craps and the E is for Eleven. The eleven bet is also referred to as the “Yo”. You don’t have to bet on both the craps and the eleven, if you would like you can just bet on one of them.

Craps pays 7 to 1 and Yo pays 11 to 1. The house advantage on the bets is 11.11%.

Hop Bet - This is betting that the next roll will land in a “hopping hardway”. For example: 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6.

The payout varies on the number that is rolled but the 2-2, 3-3…. pays 30 to 1 with a house edge of 13.8%. Another way to win is if 5-3 is rolled which pays 15 to 1 for a house edge of 11.11%.
